Page 179 of the ebook includes a reference to the late Professor Kevin Tolhurst speaking at a Howitt Society convened public meeting at Mallacoota on 5 October 2023 to discuss preparation for another major fire:
“if appropriate fuel reduction had been applied prior to the 2019–20 Black Summer Bushfires, Mallacoota would not have burned”, said Professor Tolhurst.
Failure of government to properly manage the bush
Following the Mallacoota fire, on 21 June 2022 The Howitt Society posted its opinion of the mismanagement of the protection of that community and the natural environment. It can be found under the above banner on the home page.
The government had lost the war
Professor Tolhurst’s death occurred two months after the massed [-] deaths causing suburban fire in Maui and five weeks after we had sent hard copies of this book’s 34 page initial publishing submission, to the government. It contained an aerial photo of the Maui suburban devastation and the words:
“To compound the government’s extreme bushfire risk negligence, endless truck loads of extreme bushfire fuel, tree mulch, were being distributed in the suburbs, apparently, without Government care about the deaths this alone will cause” (Chapter 1 Packham and Gammage advice).
So on 5 October 2023, at Mallacoota, the Australian government had finally lost the war, Mr Packham initiated in his 1990 ‘risk estimate’, Mr Cheney joined him after the 2003 Canberra Firestorm, and we declared 11 years later, in our first letter to the Prime Minister on 2 November 2014.

Who then at parliamentarian, responsible government agency, insurance industry or mainstream media level recognises the threat to Australians from bushfire and seeks to have that threat substantially mitigated? No one, it seems!
